EXCLUSIVE: Neena Gupta talks about Dil Dosti Aur Dogs; SLAMS makers for not promoting OTT films well: “Aap itni mehnat karte ho aur phir zyada log usko dekhte nahin. It DEPRESSES me; sometimes, I feel I should rather do a commercial film. Kam se kam, koi dekhega toh sahi”

The heartwarming film Dil Dosti Aur Dogs was released on Friday, February 28, on JioHotstar. On the same day, its actress Neena Gupta spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about the film and a lot more.

What do you usually do on the day your film releases? I am in Goa right now and I don’t have a television. Hence, I feel miserable that I can’t see the film. I’ll now wait for people’s reviews and reactions. You want appreciation and that’s why you work, right?

Do you like visiting cinema halls to see the reactions? I used to do that a lot. In recent times, my films haven’t been released in cinemas but in the past, I have visited theatres extensively.

You are at a stage in life where you are being selective in choosing in your films. Hence, what made you sign a film like Dil Dosti Aur Dogs? Firstly, it has a very good script. All the subplots have been well woven into the narrative. Secondly, my role is very different from anything I have done so far. She is a lonely, spinster kind of a woman living in her own bungalow. She doesn’t like anybody. How a dog changes her life is what the film is about.

You have extensively shot with an animal in this film. Do you like dogs in real life? Are you scared of them? Oh yes, I like dogs and no, I am not scared of them. I have four dogs in my Delhi house. I don’t have one in Mumbai, unfortunately.

How was it shooting a dog? It is very tough shooting with animals. You need to have a lot of patience. He will not do what you want him to do. Also, while you are speaking your dialogue, the caretaker might say, ‘Lie down, get up’ etc. Hence, you have to concentrate very hard and ignore the caretaker’s interruption.

Dil Dosti Aur Dogs is a feel-good film and its fun watching such films in cinemas and laughing collectively on funny scenes. We had that experience with your theatrical film Badhaai Ho (2018), which was also in the same zone. Did you ever wish that this film would have also been released on the big screen? Yes, I feel that for every film. Nowadays, OTT platforms don’t even publicize our films. It saddens me. Aap itni mehnat karte ho kisi film mein aur phir woh zyada log usko dekhte nahin hai. It depresses me. I wonder, ‘Hum itni mehnat kyun karein?’. Mast Mein Rehna Ka (2023) was also such a wonderful film. Lekin uska ek poster bhi nahin laga.

Dil Dosti Aur Dogs’ trailer was out just 3 days before its release… Yes, and there’s (no other asset of the film). In India, a very, very tiny number of TV audiences watch content on OTT. The rest watch Doordarshan or some free online platform. Also, even today, not everyone has a smartphone. Hence, sometimes, I feel that I should rather do a commercial film. Kam se kam, koi dekhega toh sahi.
