Saira Banu recalls celebrating Eid with Dilip Kumar: "Eid in our home was always a gathering of souls"

On the joyous occasion of Eid, veteran actress Saira Banu took to social media to share a deeply personal reflection on the festive celebrations she once shared with her late husband, the legendary Dilip Kumar. Through a beautifully penned note, she reminisced about how Eid in their home was more than just a festival; it was a celebration of love, togetherness, and the true spirit of humanity.

"When I was young and the sacred month of Ramzan would arrive, our home would glow not merely with flickers of light, but with sheer devotion," she wrote, recalling the peaceful atmosphere of fasting and prayer. However, after her marriage to Dilip Kumar, Eid took on a new meaning. "Our home, that belonged merely to us, became a place where love, goodwill, and bonds lived."

She painted a vivid picture of their Eid mornings, with flowers arriving from well-wishers and musicians gathering outside their Pali Hill residence. "Just as the first light of dawn stretched across the sky, a band of musicians would assemble at our doorstep, the melody of their drums and bugles would hardly be ignored by anyone in Pali Hill."

For Dilip Kumar, Eid was about embracing people with open arms. "For Sahib, there was no greater joy than in the company of kind souls, no richer wealth than the love he could extend and receive. He held a belief that a man’s worth lay not in his achievements but in the hearts he touched. And he did so, effortlessly."

His deep empathy, she shared, had the power to dissolve differences and bring people together. "More than anything, Sahib believed in humanity. As it is something tangible, something to be lived and perceived in the smallest of gestures."

For Saira Banu, those Eids remain unforgettable. "And so, Eid in our home was always a gathering of souls, a celebration of unity, a moment in time where the world seemed, for a brief and wondrous while, to be as it ought to be." Her tribute serves as a reminder that Eid is not just about celebration, but about the love we share, the kindness we extend, and the bonds that make life truly meaningful.

8 Years of Naam Shabana: Director Shivam hints at sequel; says, “I’ve asked Neeraj about a sequel or spin-off”

In Naam Shabana, much of the gripping narrative unfolds on crowded streets. Director Shivam Nair crafts scenes with an urgent, anguished energy, making us immediately sense the protagonist’s need to avenge both past and present wrongs. Taapsee Pannu plays this introverted yet determined character with a compelling mix of restraint and transparency.

It is a remarkable performance, but then, this is a remarkable film. The two halves of the narrative almost feel like separate movies—equally compelling but constructed under different circumstances. The first half focuses on the heroine’s budding relationship with a persistent admirer (played by Taher Mithaiwala), only to shatter her hopes for love. The second half shifts gears into a gripping spy thriller, with Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran delivering a menacing turn as an international villain. This is where the action sequences explode onto the screen with full force.

Reflecting on the experience, director Shivam Nair says, “It was a great experience working with writer-producer Neeraj Pandey on Naam Shabana. I admire him as one of the best writers in our industry. When he offered me this project, I jumped at the opportunity. Working with Taapsee Pannu was a pleasure—she is a committed actress, extremely hardworking, and focused. She trained extensively with action director Cyril for both Baby and Naam Shabana.”

Nair also hinted at the possibility of another instalment in the franchise. “I’ve asked Neeraj a few times about a sequel or spin-off. Let’s see what happens.”

8 Years of Naam Shabana: Taapsee Pannu reveals she doesn’t want to do female spy thriller films; says, “I did it so many years ago that now if I do it again, it’s like very weird”

Taapsee Pannu, known for her diverse film choices, recently reflected on the completion of eight years since the release of Naam Shabana. The 2017 action-spy thriller saw her take on an intense and physically demanding role, a rare choice for Bollywood actresses at the time.

Taapsee, who had previously played Shabana in Baby (2015), shared how the overwhelming response to her character led to the creation of Naam Shabana. “The response that my character received in Baby made the filmmakers plan an entire film based on Shabana aka Meera. Frankly, there was no sequel or prequel.”

Directed by Shivam Nair, Naam Shabana followed the journey of Shabana, a young woman recruited by an intelligence agency and rigorously trained to eliminate a dangerous arms dealer. The film was praised for its gripping storyline and action sequences, with Taapsee performing several stunts herself.

Akshay Kumar, who appeared in the film, had previously commended her action skills. “Taapsee did a tremendous job in Pink. I saw her doing the fights in Baby and the kind of action she did, I have seen no female do it with so much perfection. It was very inspiring for me to see her. A lot of inspiration for Naam Shabana came from the way Taapsee performed in Baby.”

The actress also reflected on how action-spy thrillers were not a mainstream trend when she took on the role. “Actually, action spy thrillers were not in like fashion. Now, everybody wants to do a spy thriller. I did it so many years ago that now if I do it again, it’s like very weird, why are you repeating yourself? I’ve done something which was so remarkable back then that I don’t want to touch it and spoil it again.”

Currently, Taapsee Pannu is returning to the action-thriller genre with Gandhari, where she portrays a mother fighting to rescue her abducted child. The film, slated for release this year, features her performing her own stunts, promising a raw and intense cinematic experience.

This anticipated crossover is set to take the Maddock supernatural universe in an exhilarating new direction, building on the success of previous horror comedies.

This marks the second time Aishwarya and Abhishek have been spotted together amid the ongoing rumors. Earlier, they made a joint appearance at filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker’s son’s wedding, where they were seen attending the festivities as a family.

Over the past few months, rumors of an alleged rift between Aishwarya and Abhishek have been making headlines. From making separate to social media users pointing out subtle hints on the platform, a lot of instances have fuelled up discussions about a possible split. However, their presence together at recent events appear to have momentarily silenced these rumors, offering a rare glimpse of unity. While neither Aishwarya nor Abhishek has addressed the speculations publicly, their joint appearance at this intimate gathering suggests that, at least for now, family remains their priority.

As fans continue to speculate about their relationship, the couple's latest outing has become a trending topic, leaving many wondering about the dynamics the duo share.

Veer Pahariya says he is embracing both the “good and bad” that have come his way following his debut film Sky Force, including the viral reels featuring his hook step from one of the movie’s hit songs.

As an outsider to the film industry, Veer Pahariya admitted that it’s challenging for someone like him to “make an impact.” He said, “I am grateful to the audience for their love for the film, my performance, and my character. With anything big, there will be both good and bad, and I am open to it."

“And, in terms of the dance step, I can't be more grateful to have an iconic dance step that will stay with me and that too so early in my career,” Pahariya told PTI at Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI. The actor made his runway debut on Saturday for the British brand Asos, wearing an all-white suit paired with a white floral-printed vest.

“This is my first fashion week ever, my first walk. I had a blast and it was very exciting, much better than expected. I am loving this, I honestly love Asos for the kind of experience it is and how easy it is to purchase. This is a great outfit. I would love to wear on a red carpet or for any award night, anything,” he said.

When asked about starring in a web series, Pahariya said he would love to explore all creative mediums. He said, “The affirmation and the encouragement you get from the box office is rather amazing. Manoj Bajpayee on Abhishek Chaubey on the latter’s birthday, “He taps into those aspects of my personality, which even I am not aware of”

Manoj Bajpayee considers Abhishek Chaubey as one of the best directors he has worked with. “A very happy birthday to one of my best directors! A rare talent and visionary! Learned so much from him and have been part of some great projects where I have grown so much as an actor!! God bless him always! We’ve done Sonchiriya, Killer Soup and the short film Ray together. I regard these as among my best work,” he said.

The actor added, “Abhishek Chaubey is one of the best contemporary directors of this country. I feel Abhishek taps into those aspects of my personality, which even I am not aware of. He just lets his actors deep-dive into their characters, not afraid of what they would come up with. The only other director who gives his actors so much space to innovate is Shekhar Kapur. While doing Killer Soup we knew we were doing something that has never been attempted before. In the short film Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, I just prepared in collaboration with my director. It was all there in the script. All I had to do was read the script as many times as possible.”

When asked to comment on Chaubey’s personality traits Manoj said, “He is very mild mannered. But he knows exactly what he wants. In Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, Abhishek made me and Gajraj Rao rehearse rigorously. We kept on exploring different facts of my character as someone drunk on his success. Then he meets a character who throws him off completely. I wanted to project the songs not as Manoj Bajpayee but my character Musafir Ali. The way he plays the harmonium and connects with the live audience …. and the way he moves his lips…All that was worked out in advance.”

Bajpayee asdded, “There was a gentleman who came on the sets to show me how to play the harmonium. So yeah, a lot of effort has gone into that one-hour film. We normally don’t see the same effort going into Hindi films. What I liked about Abhishek Choubey is that he’s so innovative. His imaginative power is superlative. Who else would have thought of adapting Mr Ray’s milieu into this world of magic realism? There is an element of theatre also in the presentation. Abhishek’s experience in theatre came in very handy. When we were rehearsing and performing in front of the camera, we made sure the mood that we had decided on (theatrical yet cinematic) was on display.”

Manoj can’t stop raving about Abhishek Chaubey. He added, “I am a great fan of Abhishek Chaubey. His imaginative power is something else. Working with Abhishek Chaubey was a dream. Sonchiriya is an all-time classic, and one of my best performances. Who could think he could make my cameo role so memorable? I hope to work with him as much as possible. I am very greedy when it comes to working with a director like Abhishek. When he casts other actors in my place, I feel very possessive about him. I vibe really well with him.”

Aamir Khan’s UNRELEASED 1983 FTII short film Subah Subah FINALLY out; has a Deewaar and ‘Ram Siya Ram’ connection

Superstar Aamir Khan has been in the news of late for several reasons. Two weeks ago, he celebrated his 60th birthday and on this occasion, he announced that he’s dating Gauri Spratt. A few days back, he unveiled his audition for Inspector Manohar Lal in Laapataa Ladies (2024). He didn’t get selected for it and instead, Kiran Rao cast Ravi Kishan. The gesture of releasing the audition video was well received. And now, another fascinating tape of the superstar has found its way on the internet. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on March 28 uploaded a 1983 student diploma film named Subah Subah on their YouTube handle. It features Aamir Khan in a leading role.

This was probably the first or one of Aamir's first acting assignments. It features a very young Aamir Khan playing the role of an IMA (Indian Military Academy) aspirant. He lives with his mother and kind-hearted elder sister. He’s also dating a lovely girl and trouble arises when they both get harassed by the goons.

Aamir Khan was probably 17 when he worked on this film and it's fascinating to see how he performed at that young age. Even then, his screen presence was arresting. This is a film in which he gets a chance to be the silent hero as well as break into a dance and also action.

The narrative is a bit random. Towards the end of the film, Aamir Khan and actress Karishma (not to be confused with Karishma Kapoor) suddenly sing ‘Keh Doon Tumhe’ from Deewaar (1975). The beginning of the film shows Shubha Khote as Aamir’s mother playing the song ‘Ram Siya Ram’ from Geet Gaata Chal (1975) on a tape recorder. Both the producers of the film have been credited in the end credits. Funnily, they have been credited twice, probably by mistake.

Besides Aamir Khan, Karishma, Ajit, Ishrat Khan and Shubha Khote have also performed well. The end credits inform viewers that while Rajat Dholakia worked on the background score, the assistant cameraman was none other than Anil Mehta.

The FTII’s Instagram handle about Subah Subah has a caption that says, ‘Shot at FTII, this film marked an exciting chapter in Aamir’s early career, and his talent was already evident! Though not an FTII student, Aamir Khan seized the opportunity, and the rest, as they say, is cinematic history.’

It was thanks to Subah Subah and a few other FTII films of Aamir that he got a chance to work in Ketan Mehta’s 1984 film Holi. These films helped the star hone his acting skills and it's no wonder that we saw a more refined and worthy performance in his first film as a lead actor, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).

Prithviraj Sukumaran showers praises on Priyanka Chopra for her performance in Barfi!; calls it ‘mind-blowing’

Prithviraj Sukumaran, the acclaimed Malayalam actor and filmmaker, recently heaped praise on Priyanka Chopra’s performance in the 2012 film Barfi! during a conversation with Instant Bollywood. When asked about his favorite film of the actor, he promptly named Barfi! and lauded her remarkable portrayal of an autistic girl.

Prithviraj Sukumaran reveals why Priyanka Chopra is one of his favourite actresses

“Barfi! It is one of the finest performances by any lead actor—male or female—in Indian cinema, in the past 25 years. I know Ranbir’s performance was amazing, but I don’t think Priyanka’s was as spoken about as much as Ranbir’s. That character Priyanka did in Barfi! was a very thin line to walk. An inch left or inch right, it really would have really fallen flat. But my God, she did a mind-blowing job,” said Prithviraj.

About Barfi!

Barfi!, directed by Anurag Basu, featured Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role alongside Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz. The film revolves around the life of a mute and deaf young man, Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor), and his relationships with two women, Shruti (Ileana D’Cruz) and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic girl. Priyanka’s performance as Jhilmil was widely appreciated, as she effectively captured the nuances of the character without overplaying or underplaying her condition.

The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning multiple accolades, including nominations at international film festivals.

Priyanka Chopra makes a comeback to Indian Cinema; Prithviraj Sukumaran excited for L2: Empuraan

On the work front, Priyanka Chopra is set to make her return to Indian cinema with SSMB29, an ambitious project directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu. Trade experts predict that Sikandar can collect Rs. 40-45 crores on Sunday as well as Monday; all eyes on Salman Khan to finally deliver a Rs. 500 crores blockbuster

The release of Salman Khan’s Eid release Sikandar is just a few days away. Bollywood Hungama spoke to trade experts and exhibitors about their expectations from this grand Eid release.

While Sikandar arrives in cinemas on March 30, the trailer dropped just a week before, on March 23. The experts first shared their views on the promo. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I liked the trailer. The good thing is that Salman Khan has stepped out of his comfort zone of directors like Farhad Samji. Today, we see a very different Salman Khan that too in a film which is produced by one of the leading producers, Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by a very talented storyteller, A R Murugadoss. Moreover, it co-stars one of the luckiest names in the business, Rashmika Mandanna. Hence, everything is going right prior to the release. It now all boils down to the content.”

Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal stated, “The trailer is very commercial. I have a lot of hope from the director. He’s a very big plus point. The music didn’t support the film as expected. But the film will fetch a good opening. Then, it will all depend on the content.” He added, “Rashmika’s luck will play a major role in this film as well.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, also said, “The director and producers are credible. The actress is on a winning streak. Hence, everything is working for the film.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan agreed saying, “Our industry anyway believes in superstitions. Now, Rashmika Mandanna has got the term of lucky mascot. People believe that whichever film she is a part of becomes a blockbuster. We hope that the success streak continues with Sikandar as well.”

He also said, “The trailer is great. It looks like a complete entertainer, replete with action and mass moments.”

Day 1 predictions

The trade experts seem very confident of the film’s opening. Salman Khan’s 2023 Eid film Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan had a low opening of Rs. 15.81 crores. The trade is confident that Sikandar can earn double of this number. Atul Mohan said, “Both days, the film will collect Rs. 40-45 crores plus. If the word of mouth is strong, then Monday will be bigger than Sunday.”

Raj Bansal also predicted along the same lines saying, “The film can collect Rs. 40-45 crores each day. Then, the content will determine the collections from Tuesday.”

Vishek Chauhan, meanwhile, said, “Since it’s a day before Eid, I am expecting the first day collections to be Rs. 25-30 crores. The second day should see a good spike when the film can collect Rs. 40-50 crores.”

Sikandar releases on Sunday, March 30, that is, a day before Eid, which falls on Monday, March 31. Yet, Raj Bansal believes that even Sunday can put up a huge number, “Non-Muslims, who are Salman fans, and youth, will go watch the film on the release day. We also need to understand that there has been no major biggie since the release of Chhaava which was released 1 ½ months ago. A section of moviegoers didn’t watch Chhaava and those who did, many of them were left very disturbed by the climax. A lot of moviegoers told me, ‘My wife kept her hands on her eyes; my kids got very scared’. Of course, the film did fantastic business. But this will go in favour of Sikandar.”

Taran Adarsh explained, “With the film releasing on a Sunday and Monday being a holiday, Sikandar will have an extended window to reap the harvest, provided the content delivers. The first day will all be about the star power while the second day is when the content will speak up.”

He added, “Tiger 3 (2023), Salman Khan’s last release, had collected nearly Rs. 43 crores in Hindi on day 1. Sikandar will have to cross that number. While that film was released on Diwali, aap Eid pe aa rahe ho. And both are Sunday releases.”

When asked if collecting in the range of Rs. 100 crores is possible for Sikandar, Taran Adarsh exulted, “It is possible. But for Salman Khan, doing Rs. 100 crores in a couple of days is not a yardstick anymore. It would have been a big deal if the film starred a rising star. Shah Rukh Khan with Pathaan and Jawan delivered Rs. 500 crores grossers. Sunny Deol entered the Rs. 500 crores club with Gadar 2. Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal also delivered Rs. 500 crores films with Animal and Chhaava respectively. Stree 2 was a great brand and the content was strong; it earned Rs. 600 crores. Hence, Salman has to deliver the numbers. The pressure is there. Rs. 100 aur 200 crores se kaam nahin chalega.”

He continued, “Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai crossed the Rs. 300 crores mark way back. Ab toh Rs. 500 crores kar lo! In today’s times, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had the potential to even collect Rs. 800 crores. This is because it blends star power with emotions beautifully.”

He ended his answer by cautioning that Sikandar can still open with a bang even if the advance is not huge. He said, “Such mass films rely on spot bookings. Spot bookings poora khel badal deti hai.”

EXCLUSIVE: John Abraham opens up on his no-publicity approach; says, “Let’s speak to people who’ve seen the film after the film releases”

John Abraham recently opened up about his film The Diplomat and his decision to avoid traditional promotional tactics. In an interview on Bollywood Hungama’s Light, Camera, Podcast, John reflected on staying away from excessive publicity, a choice that sets him apart from many actors.

Acknowledging that John had never actively sought media attention, he only began interviews after The Diplomat’s release and positive reception, unlike other actors who frequently engage in city tours and mall visits for promotions.

Addressing his approach, John stated, “I don’t have a publicist. But I have a personal relationship. I really had to fight this battle with my people when The Diplomat was being released. They said, ‘Interviews karo, interviews karo, interviews karo,’ and I said, ‘Yes, I get you.’ And this is what I explained to my director also—that by doing more interviews, it doesn’t mean you’re marketing a film. Because interviews are promotion, and promotions are only one of the four Ps of marketing. You’ve got other aspects: product, place, price, and promotion.”

John emphasized that true marketing comes from how a studio pushes a film. He added, “So it’s very important that a studio pushes a film through the units that are made for the film—that’s marketing. Whether hoardings work or don’t work, I’m not getting into that. Or whether your trailer is being attached to a certain film that releases before it—that’s real marketing. How you want to market your film. Giving interviews does not really mean you’re marketing a film. But for me, I had to walk the tightrope and convince, and my director had signed up with me on it. But I said, ‘Listen, let’s speak to people who’ve seen the film after the film. It’s a risk we’re running, but let’s speak to people who’ve seen the film after the film.’”

He argued that visiting colleges or public spaces doesn’t guarantee ticket sales. John further explained, “As an actor, you’re known by the product you make, not by going to a college. If I go to a college, I’m assuming, like any other actor would, there would be a lot of people that would come and see you. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to buy tickets. And I don’t think we’ve still got that. Our studios haven’t got that.”

He also appreciated how OTT platforms allow actors to watch a film before interviews, saying, “So it’s great. I think that’s fantastic. They should show you the film before you do the interview. Then we have a basis of what we are talking about.”

However, John expressed a concern that The Diplomat might gain recognition only after its OTT release. “One thing that I’d be really saddened by—and it’s happened in the past also—is when I know that when this film comes on Netflix, it’ll explode. It will get a new life. And those people are going to call me up or message me and say, ‘Hey, why didn’t we go to the cinema hall to see this film?’ And that’s going to break my heart. So I just wish more people come out and watch this film and its cinematic run.”

The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair, stars John Abraham as a government official navigating a high-stakes crisis. The film is currently playing in theaters.

Shah Rukh Khan’s call about Dunki tite left Akashdeep Sabir in disbelief: “Mote, Shah Rukh bol raha hoon”

Actor Shah Rukh Khan tackled the delicate issue of illegal immigration in his 2023 film Dunki. But have you ever wondered how the Bollywood superstar acquired the unique title for the Rajkumar Hirani-directed comedy-drama? Actor-filmmaker Akashdeep Sabir recently revealed in a podcast how Shah Rukh obtained the title from him.

In a conversation with Lehren Retro, Akashdeep shared that during the pandemic, he learned about illegal immigrants navigating harsh terrains to reach America. He then hired a writer to develop a four-season series, which was planned for production by Netflix. He had also secured titles such as The Donkey Route, The Road to Death, and Dunki. Meanwhile, around the same time, Rajkumar Hirani was working on a similar concept with Shah Rukh Khan, and they decided to name their film Dunki.

Recalling the incident, Akashdeep shared, “Rajkumar Hirani thought on the same lines. Then, Shah Rukh said, ‘What is the film’s title?’ Then he said, Dunki. Shah Rukh asked Rajkumar to apply for a copyright, assuming nobody would have claimed this title. Then Rajkumar said, ‘No, Akash has it’. As soon as Shah Rukh heard my name, he said, ‘Don’t worry about him, I’ll speak with him.’”

Akashdeep shared that he had known Shah Rukh Khan during his early days in Mumbai but had lost touch over time. So when he suddenly received a call from the superstar, he was in disbelief. “I was in my editing room, working on something, when I got a call from an unknown number. The voice on the other end said, ‘Mote, Shah Rukh bol raha hoon.’ I thought someone was playing a prank on me. He called again and, as always, was polite. He said, ‘Hey, I think I called you at the wrong time. This is my number, please save it. I am not on WhatsApp, but you can reach me via SMS. Let me know when you’re free, and I’ll call you.’ The moment I heard that, I realized it was really him and quickly apologized, saying, ‘I’m so sorry, I thought someone was pranking me.’”

Akashdeep shared that the very next day, Shah Rukh invited him for dinner. During their meeting, Shah Rukh brought up the title Dunki and asked if he could use it for the film. Without hesitation, Akashdeep agreed on the spot. He also mentioned that Shah Rukh arranged a meeting with Rajkumar Hirani and others involved in the project to ensure there were no similarities or conflicts between their works.

Dunki, featuring Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal, was released in December 2023. Shah Rukh Khan will next be seen in King.

15 years of Well Done Abba: Boman Irani recalls working with Shyam Benegal, "He never lets you feel he was the man with all that genius"

The late Shyam Benegal teamed up with Boman Irani for the first and the last time in Well Done Abba. The film, which also starred Minissha Lamba, Sonali Kulkarni and Ravi Kishan, completed 15 years yesterday. On the film’s anniversary, Boman Irani went down memory lane on working with Benegal.

Your only film with Shyam Benegal is now 15 years old

Well Done Abba, and I don't say this loosely, I don't say this lightly, that Well Done Abba was one of the greatest working experiences in my life. The moment I was first called, I mean, I literally stood at attention.

What was it like working with Benegal?

It was my first lead role, to make matters more exciting for me. And when you're talking to Mr Benegal, you know, you're talking to greatness. I mean, there's no secret about it. But he never lets you feel that he was the man with all that genius and all that experience and with that legacy that he has behind him. He spoke to you as an equal, as he did with every single person on the set. Apart from his knowledge of cinema, and for that matter, everything from a pin to an elephant, he can tell you where it came from and which year it was made and why it was designed so. I mean, you know, it's funny, the man's knowledge is scary in general.

What was Shayam babu like as a director?

What I saw on the set was a person dealing with humanity with every single person. That's my greatest takeaway working with Mr. Benegal. If we broke for lunch at 1, he says, can you hold this emotion till after lunch? And I would say, sure. I said, why can't we not work for another 10 minutes and complete the shot? He said, no, if you can hold it well and good, because I don't like to stretch the lunch break time because everybody on the set is, you know, not as invested as you and I. An army, I mean, a crew like the army marches on its stomach. And not only must you feed them on time, you must feed them well.

Yes, I believe he made sure the food on the set was impeccable

Considering it was a very, very tight budget film, the food selected by him, the caterer selected by him as the producer was top class because it meant that people should be happy when they come back to work in the afternoon instead of others being grumpy and sleepy.

He was super-democratic on the set

No actor was too big on the set. No crew member was too big or too small on the set. And I will always cherish this one experience in my life. And that's the very reason why I'm speaking at length. Otherwise, sometimes you run out of steam. So what do you say about somebody when people ask you for a quote? You say a couple of lines and say, thank you. And I had fun. But I can go on and on about Mr. Benegal, but I think this should do for what you asked me for. Thank you so much.

Nitesh Tiwari recalls his early days, “I even worked in a software company, but I didn’t find peace”

Nitesh Tiwari, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Indian cinema, is known for his unique storytelling that blends humor, light-hearted moments, and compelling narratives. His journey from an IIT engineer to a celebrated director is truly inspiring. In a recent interview with Komal Nahta on the Game Changers podcast, Nitesh was asked about the inspiration behind his unique approach. He revealed that his unique perspective developed during his IIT days when he began writing and he carried this innovative mindset into filmmaking.

The actor recalled his engineering days and how he was always into the creative field. He said, “I wouldn't say since childhood, sir, but when I was doing my degree at IIT Bombay, I was quite inclined towards the creative field. And there I saw that there were a lot of competitions in every hostel, and there was a lot of effort to do something original, something different. Even the pranks, which we call pranks, those pranks also had originality. So, then I felt that there is fun in this, what is being done is unexpected.”

Nitesh further added how he carried his unique approach to writing saying, “So, somewhere I started writing. So, that thing remained in my writing during my IIT days also, that when I used to write plays or one-act or mono-acting pieces, I used to try to write something original, to do something different. I think that stayed with me.”

Komal then asked Nitesh if he ever thought this would be his profession after studying engineering. To which the director replied, “No sir, I never thought. There was a desire to become a writer, and while studying, the desire to become a writer arose. I didn't know if I had this capability. You know, sir, when you are deciding for a career, you genuinely don't know where your passion is.”

The director revealed how he even worked as a software developer after his studies before venturing into filmmaking, adding, “In my time, in the 90s, if you were good at studies, you would either become a doctor or an engineer. It's not that I didn't have interest. I even worked in a software company for four months, but somewhere I didn't find that peace. I wanted to do what I love, you know, not what I want to be made to do.”

Salman Khan talks about Salim Khan-Salma Khan’s love story: “The issue was not that my father was a Muslim while my mother was a Hindu. The problem was that ‘Yeh aadmi film industry ka hai’”

Salman Khan spoke his heart out during the group interaction held at a five-star hotel in Mumbai as part of promotions of Sikandar. At the very beginning of the interaction, he was asked about the value of family and he gave a lovely answer with regards to his parents, that is, father Salim Khan and mother Salma Khan.

Salman began by saying, “My mother and father belonged to different cultures and religions. But the issue was not that my father was a Muslim while my mother was a Hindu. The problem was that ‘Yeh aadmi film industry ka hai’! My nana had a problem that he was from the film industry, not because of anything else.”

Salma Khan’s father didn’t have good relations with Salim Khan and Salma after marriage. Salman Khan continued, “It was when Sohail was born that (my nana and my father bonded). My nana loved my father so much that he said, ‘Meri life ki sabse badi galti yeh hui ki I wasted 5 years’.”

He further revealed, “One my mom fought with my father and left our house. She went to stay at my nana’s place. However, my nana told her, ‘Dekho, tumhari arthi ab wahin se uthegi. You are welcome to stay with us but don’t ever leave your husband’.”

Salman then wondered, “Pata nahin mere father ne mere grandfather pe kya jadoo chalaya!”

Sikandar releases in cinemas on March 30. Interestingly, his father made a rare appearance at the trailer launch of this film on Sunday, March 23. It became a big talking point on the internet and also in the industry.

Meanwhile, at this interaction, Salman Khan also explained why his film with Atlee couldn’t materialize, “I don’t think it’s happening right now. It was happening at one point in time. We tried really hard to work it out but something happened. I don’t know what exactly it was. I believe it was the budget of the film. It’s a very, very high-budgeted film. Hence, that film has been pushed. Woh film 2 film ka time leke chala jaata. Now, I have got enough time to do one film and then, I’ll do another film.”

Aarya Babbar REACTS to Prateik dropping Raj Babbar’s name: “You can change your name, but you can’t change your identity”

The Babbar family has been making headlines ever since Prateik Babbar tied the knot with actress Priya Banerjee. However, what truly sparked debate was Prateik’s decision to drop his father Raj Babbar’s surname and instead adopt his late mother Smita Patil’s name, now officially going by Prateik Smita Patil.

Aarya Babbar Responds to Prateik’s Name Change Reacting to Prateik’s decision, his half-brother, Aarya Babbar spoke to Hindustan Times and shared his perspective. He stated, “I just have to say that Smita ma is our mother too. And what name he doesn’t want to keep and what name he wants to keep is his choice.”

Aarya further elaborated, saying, “Kal ko main uthke apna naam Aarya Babbar se Aarya karlun, ya Rajesh kar lun. Main tab bhi Babbar hi rahunga na? (Tomorrow, if I wake up and change my name from Aarya Babbar to just Aarya, or even Rajesh, I'll still be a Babbar, won't I?).”

He stated that while names can be changed, one's identity remains constant. “Aap apna name change kar sakte ho, wajood nahi. Rahunga toh Babbar hi becasue wajood mera woh hi hai, aap woh kaise change kar sakte ho? (You can change your name, but you can’t change your identity. I will always be a Babbar because my existence is rooted in that, how can you change that?).” Why Did Prateik Babbar Change His Name? In a recent interview with The Times of India, Prateik Babbar shed light on his name change decision, stating, “I don’t care about the repercussions. All I care about is the way I feel when I hear that name.” He explained that he wanted to be wholly and solely associated with his mother, Smita Patil, and her legacy. “I don’t think any other name needs to taint that legacy, if you understand what I mean. It needs to just be her name and her legacy. That’s what I’m striving to be. I’m striving to be like my mother and not like my dad,” he further stated. Babbar Family Dynamics: A Brief Overview Prateik Babbar is the son of late actress Smita Patil and veteran actor Raj Babbar. After Smita Patil’s untimely passing, Raj Babbar married Nadira Babbar, with whom he shares two children, Aarya Babbar and Juhi Babbar. Prateik’s wedding also stirred controversy as he reportedly did not invite his father, Raj Babbar, to the ceremony. He married Priya Banerjee on February 14 at Smita Patil’s house.

Sikandar Kher on juggling three back-to-back projects, “I am very happy and grateful that I am busy”

Sikandar Kher is on a roll with three diverse projects lined up. The talented actor is currently shooting three films simultaneously—Sriram Raghavan’s much-anticipated war drama Ikkis, the quirky comedy Baby Do Die Do, produced by Saqib Saleem and Huma Qureshi, and the romantic entertainer Jassi Weds Jassi.

Ideally, Sikandar prefers not to take on too many projects at once as he likes to focus on different characters individually. However, he also doesn’t believe in saying no to work and is grateful for the opportunities coming his way.

Speaking about his whirlwind schedule, Sikandar shared, “Currently, I don’t have the luxury of doing one film at a time, but don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Being on set, working and having my films and shows release is the only thing I want. The roles I am doing right now are very different from one another and I am enjoying the process. To be honest, it wouldn’t be too bad if the dates work out so well that neither overlapped. Then again that’s unlikely and I am very happy and grateful that I am busy and God willing it stays that way.”

With such a dynamic line-up, fans are eager to see Sikandar in varied avatars.

Aamir Khan opens up on rejecting Dangal first; says, “Mujhe laga yeh Salman Khan ya Shah Rukh Khan ke log hain, jo mujhe baahar karna chahte hain”

Aamir Khan recently revealed that he was initially hesitant to sign Dangal (2016), despite its eventual success. He jokingly speculated that Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan might have sent the director with the script to sabotage his career.

In an interview with chat with Just Too Filmy, Aamir Khan, stated that he chooses films based on instinct rather than audience expectations. He cited Lagaan, Peepli Live, and Dangal as projects driven by personal conviction rather than box-office trends.

Aamir Khan revealed that despite loving the Dangal script, he was hesitant to play Mahavir Singh Phogat. Coming off Dhoom 3, where he looked younger and fitter, he was unsure about portraying an ageing, bulky father.

Aamir Khan jokingly admitted that he initially suspected Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari had been sent by Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan to sabotage his career. “Mujhe laga yeh Salman ya Shah Rukh ke log hain, jo mujhe baahar karna chahte hain,” he quipped.

He even suggested waiting 10-15 years to take on the role, to which Tiwari surprisingly agreed, insisting he wouldn’t make the film with anyone else.

Despite his initial reluctance, Aamir Khan admitted that Dangal’s script was too powerful to ignore. “I couldn't let it go, even if it meant taking a risk with my career,” he confessed.

Dangal not only became the biggest Indian blockbuster of 2016 but also set records in China, crossing the Rs 2,000-crore mark globally.

On the work front, Aamir Khan will next be seen in Sitaree Zameen Par, co-starring Genelia D’Souza. The film is set to release on December 25.

Avinash Das reflects on eight years of Anaarkali of Aarah: “My first film, my loudest voice”

How do you feel about Anaarkali of Aarah eight years down the line? It’s been eight years since Anaarkali of Aarah was released, yet it feels like it happened just yesterday. The memories from that time—the sounds, the images, the emotions—still echo within me with undiminished clarity. In some corner of my mind, time seems to have stood still, and I remain that same first-time filmmaker, watching the world I created unfold on a screen for the very first time. For me, Anaarkali of Aarah wasn’t just a film. It was a flight, a dream, a defiant poem woven from the threads of resistance, truth, and longing. A debut film is always a landmark in a filmmaker’s life, but this one—this one was a declaration of intent. It wasn’t only a story I wanted to tell; it was the voice I had carried in me for years, waiting for its moment to burst forth.

Tell me about the genesis of this compelling film. Crossing over from journalism into filmmaking is no small leap. Journalism gave me my politics, my lens, my empathy, and my instinct to dig deeper into the reality behind appearances. But the dream of holding a camera and telling a story with moving images never let me go. When I first wrote the story of Anaarkali of Aarah, I didn’t know if anyone would take it seriously. A folk singer who retaliates after being molested on stage and takes on the system—this logline alone made many people uncomfortable. It was considered "non-commercial," "too local," "too bold." But I wasn’t interested in market metrics; I was interested in truth. And I knew this film had to be made.

How did Swara Bhasker come into the picture? At the heart of any film is its protagonist. And I needed someone who could embody Anaarkali—bold, vibrant, unapologetic, rooted. A woman who could set the screen on fire and still make you feel the earth beneath her feet. Swara Bhasker was that woman. Our initial conversations were filled with passion, questions, and an intense commitment to the character. Swara didn’t just play Anaarkali; she lived her. She stepped into the mud, danced in the cold, screamed with fury, and carried the burden of every woman who had ever been wronged and silenced. It was not just a performance; it was an act of rebellion.

The shooting was really tough, wasn’t it? We shot the film in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi—not Aarah, as some might assume. The bitter cold of North India during the winter made every day a challenge. We had a limited budget, limited resources, and almost no margin for error. But what we had in abundance was passion. And sometimes, that is enough. There were days when the camera wouldn’t roll smoothly, nights when the fog was too thick to shoot, mornings when we were running on two hours of sleep. But there was fire in everyone’s eyes—the actors, the technicians, the spot boys, the costume girls. We were all chasing something that felt bigger than ourselves. Every shot had sweat behind it. Every scene had truth.

Pahlaj Nihalani and the censor board clamped down on the film? Once the film was complete, we faced a quiet but calculated hurdle—the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) awarded Anaarkali of Aarah an ‘A’ certificate. There weren’t loud objections or dramatic demands for cuts; instead, it was a more subtle move—a classification that would directly impact the film’s reach and visibility. Our producers were clear—they didn’t want a prolonged battle with the board. The focus was on ensuring that the film, as we had envisioned it, reached the audience in its true form—even if that meant accepting the limitations imposed by the ‘A’ certificate. As a filmmaker, I felt the frustration. Anaarkali was not a film of vulgarity or titillation; it was a film of resistance, of voice, of power. And yet, it was boxed in. But sometimes, you pick your battles. We chose to let the film speak louder than the label it was given. And it did.

The film found a strong niche audience? Despite the restrictions, Anaarkali of Aarah resonated. People found it, watched it, talked about it, and embraced it. The audience saw beyond the certificate, and perhaps that’s the greatest victory—that Anaarkali reached hearts, even when the system tried to limit her wings. When the film finally released, I didn’t expect what happened next. We were a small film with no big budget or marketing blitz. But we had honesty. And honesty speaks. People began writing to me—some emotionally moved, some stirred, some awakened. One message said, “We saw our sister in Anaarkali.” Another said, “For the first time, we saw our dialect, our struggles, our anger on screen.” No award could compare to that. So when you asked me what I feel now, eight years later—I found myself unable to speak for a moment. It all came rushing back—the nights I cried while writing the script, the mornings I forced myself to believe, the afternoons when no one returned my calls, the evenings when I wondered if this film would ever see the light of day. Since Anaarkali, I have made three more films and directed two web series. I’ve even started my own production house. But nothing ever quite feels like the first time.

Why? Because a debut film is not just a project. It’s a mirror. It shows you who you really are. It introduces you to your own voice—your fears, your courage, your politics, your pain. Even now, when someone hums Mann Baqaid Hua or Dunaliya Mein Jang Laaga Ho, or quotes a dialogue from the film—it touches something deep in me. I realize then that we created something enduring. Something that did not fade away with time. Anaarkali of Aarah gave me more than recognition. It gave me responsibility. It taught me that cinema is not just for entertainment—it can be a language of protest.

I owe everything to the people who walked with me on this journey—my producers, my co-writers, the cast and crew, the technicians, the spot boys, the costume department, the drivers, the chaiwala—each and every one who believed in a film that had no safety net. And I thank the audience—for embracing a bold, unapologetic woman from the heartland and making her a part of their own hearts.

Today, as I work on new projects—bigger sets, bigger ideas—I still carry Anaarkali inside me. She hasn’t left. She still sings, she still dances, and she still dares to speak truth to power. Anaarkali of Aarah was not just a film. It was the first song of my soul. And such songs don’t fade. They become echoes. They become memory. They become a legacy.

The first look reveals a raw and gritty transformation. Shot across Madhya Pradesh, Donali also stars Divyendu Sharma and Barun Sobti.

Parul Gulati’s Transformation in Donali: A Gritty New Avatar Parul Gulati's character has an unpolished, earthy look and a fierce presence, reflecting strength and resilience. In the first glimpse, she is seen holding a desi katta with confidence, a skill that demands training and practice. Her appearance and body language align with the character’s authenticity, capturing the essence of Chambal’s world.

Sharing her thoughts on this transformative role, Parul said “Playing a dacoit in Donali has been one of the most thrilling experiences of my career. This character is raw, gritty, and unapologetic—very different from anything I’ve done before. The look itself speaks volumes; it’s stripped down, real, and full of intensity. “Adolescence is a wake up loud call to parents”: Karan Johar pens emotional note for Netflix series; calls it “blasterclass”

Bollywood filmmaker and producer Karan Johar recently shared a heartfelt and thought-provoking review of the Netflix mini-series Adolescence, calling it a “gut-wrenching” reflection on parenting and the pervasive influence of social media. In a detailed note posted on his social media, Johar praised the four-episode series as a “blasterclass for parents,” speaking of its relevance in today’s digital era and its profound impact on him both as a filmmaker and as a father to twins.

A Personal Reflection on Parenting Johar began his review by delving into the complexities of raising children. “I have always known that raising a child is as much a blessing as it is an arduous responsibility,” he wrote. “No book or podcast can prepare you or teach you to be the best version of yourself as a parent … what you need to first be is the best version of YOURSELF.” He highlighted how a parent’s words, actions, habits, and beliefs inevitably shape their children, noting, “They are embodiments of your soul … you may not realise the reflection but they will mirror you.” Adolescence: A Mirror to Modern Parenting In his note, Johar described Adolescence as a “wake-up loud call” for parents raising children in the age of social media. He contrasted his own upbringing with the realities of today’s youth: “I grew up on conversations, they speak in emojis … I grew up on books, they scroll reels … I grew up on self-discovery, they are surrounded by comparisons.” For Johar, the show exposes a hidden “pandemic” of disconnection and pressure that defines the current generation—a crisis amplified by platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

He praised Adolescence for tackling pressing issues such as “the gaze of perceived masculinity,” bullying, and the tendency to overlook children’s habits and behavioral patterns. “The pandemic is NOW! We just don’t see it,” Johar warned, urging parents to confront these challenges head-on. A Filmmaker Moved by Technical Brilliance Beyond its emotional depth, Johar lauded the series as a “technical marvel,” particularly its innovative use of four groundbreaking long shots. “The technical marvel of 4 ground-breaking long shots moved me as a filmmaker but broke me as a parent,” he wrote.

For Johar, Adolescence transcends the realm of mere entertainment. “This is more than a series, it’s a forever lesson,” he declared, crediting the show with heightening his “awareness and responsibility quotient” as a parent. He expressed gratitude to the creators—led by Stephen Graham—and Netflix for delivering a project that doubles as both a storytelling triumph and a societal mirror.

“I am raising twins … and I thank this show for building my awareness,” Johar added, emphasizing how the series has influenced his perspective on parenting in a digitally dominated world.

Sikandar trailer launch: Salman Khan DEFENDS 31-year age gap with Rashmika Mandanna; says, “Jab heroine ko problem nahin hai…”

Actor Salman Khan recently made headlines during the trailer launch of his upcoming action-packed film Sikandar, where he addressed the ongoing social media chatter about the 31-year age difference between him and his co-star Rashmika Mandanna. The actor took a firm stand against critics, asserting that the age gap should not be an issue if the actress herself is unbothered by it.

Salman’s Bold Response to Social Media Trolls Speaking at the event, Salman Khan responded to the trolling and scrutiny that often accompanies such pairings in Bollywood. “Social media wale log aaj kal peeche pad jaate hai. Now they are saying that there is a 31-year difference between the heroine and me. Arey jab heroine ko problem nahin hai, heroine ke father ko problem nahin hai, toh tumko kyun problem hai bhai?” he quipped, translating to: “When the heroine has no problem with it, and her father has no issue, why should it bother you, brother?” His witty response was met with cheers and applause from the audience.

The actor didn’t stop at defending the age gap. He spoke about the evolving nature of an actor’s career, particularly for women in the industry. “Tomorrow when she gets married and has kids and becomes a big star, even then she will continue to work, right?”

This isn’t the first time Salman Khan has starred opposite a significantly younger actress. Over the years, he has worked with leading ladies like Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani, and Sonakshi Sinha, often facing similar criticism. Rashmika Mandanna: The Rising Star Rashmika Mandanna, often referred to as the "National Crush," has carved a niche for herself in both South Indian cinema and Bollywood. With blockbusters like Pushpa: The Rise and her Bollywood debut Goodbye, she brings a fresh energy to Sikandar. While Rashmika has not publicly commented on the age gap controversy, her pairing with Salman is already generating buzz, with fans eager to see their on-screen chemistry. The Age Gap Debate in Bollywood The discussion around age differences between male and female actors in Bollywood is not new. Veteran actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan have frequently been paired with actresses half their age, while female actors of similar age brackets are rarely cast in lead romantic roles opposite younger heroes. Salman’s blunt dismissal of the criticism at the Sikandar trailer launch has once again brought this topic into the limelight, prompting mixed reactions online. While some netizens praised Salman for calling out unnecessary trolling, others argued that the industry should focus on more balanced representation. What to Expect from Sikandar Sikandar marks Salman Khan’s return to the big screen after his 2023 film Tiger 3. Directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film will be released on March 30. The advance booking window will be opened on March 25, which is tomorrow.

Avneet Kaur responds to cosmetic surgery rumours; says, “I haven’t done anything to change my features”

Actor Avneet Kaur, who started her career as a child artiste in television shows, has recently made waves on social media due to her transformation, sparking speculation among internet users about possible plastic surgery. In an interview with Hauterrfly, Avneet has now responded to these rumours.

Speaking about her puberty journey, Avneet shared, “I feel like I’ve grown up in front of the camera. Sometimes, I still feel so weird when people say, ‘Oh, she’s had so much done to her face,’ or ‘She’s changed so much,’ or ‘She looks completely different.’ Well, when you saw me, I was 7 or 8 years old, literally a little kid. There’s a huge difference between then and now. Now I’m 23, so of course there’s bound to be a difference. You hit puberty, your features change, and you grow up.”

She also dismissed the rumours about undergoing cosmetic procedures and revealed the secret to her beauty. She explained, “I don’t get fillers, but I do get facials, and I definitely take care of my skin. I do everything to tighten my skin. I haven’t done anything to change my features, like getting a different nose. Nothing like that has happened to me. I have decent features.”

Avneet started her career in 2010 by participating in Zee TV's dance show Dance India Dance Li'l Masters, but was eliminated just before the semi-finals. She made her acting debut in 2012 with the show Meri Maa and went on to appear in several other series, including Savitri – Ek Prem Kahani, Chandra Nandini, Ek Mutthi Aasmaan, and Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga.

Avneet made her Bollywood debut in Rani Mukerji's film Mardaani, followed by a cameo in Qarib Qarib Singlle. She later played the lead role opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Tiku Weds Sheru, a film produced by Kangana Ranaut, which received mixed-to-negative reviews. She then appeared alongside Sunny Singh in Luv Ki Arrange Marriage.

Avneet is now set to star in the film Love in Vietnam, directed by Rahhat Shah Kazmi. The film also features Shantanu Maheshwari, Raj Babbar, and Farida Jalal in key roles. Loosely based on the bestselling Turkish novel Madonna in a Fur Coat, the release date of the film has yet to be announced.

Pushpa-level business in 1948? Sooraj Barjatya says his grandfather Tarachand Barjatya released the first Pan-India blockbuster, Chandralekha: “It was the Baahubali of those times”

Sooraj Barjatya had an interesting conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day, during which he spoke about his films, his journey and also that of his production house, Rajshri Productions, started by his grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya. The Pan-India phenomenon is quite huge right now, which usually involves a Southern language film being dubbed into Hindi. Sooraj Barjatya revealed that it was his grandfather who probably began this trend.

Sooraj Barjatya began by saying that Tarachand Barjatya used to work as a manager in Kolkata in a Bengali film company, Chamaria Pictures. This production house allowed him to start a small side business and this is how Tarachand began distributing films.

Sooraj Barjatya said, “Whenever I used to talk to him (Tarachand Barjatya), he used to have tears in his eyes when he would speak about Gemini Pictures. He started a small distribution company in CP-Berar. He was wondering how to start his business. He went to the South and met S S Vasan, who had made Chandralekha (1948), a Tamil film. It was a big hit film. He told Mr Vasan, ‘Why don’t you dub it in Hindi and release it all-India?’. Vasan asked, ‘Who would watch it? For them, it’s a non-star cast’. But my grandfather insisted that he should attempt. It was a big film; it was like Baahubali of those times.”

Sooraj Barjatya continued, “They (Chandralekha makers) dubbed and even reshot some portions with actors to match the lip movement. When the dubbed version was ready to be released, Mr Vasan told my grandfather to meet him to ‘talk business’. Mr Vasan asked him what he would like in return for the idea that he gave him. My grandfather said, ‘Whatever you feel like’. He replied, ‘I want you to open the all-India distribution with this film. Abhi nahin toh kab karoge? I want you to become as big as me’. Hearing this, my grandfather began to cry.”

Sooraj added, “Chandralekha was released by us and it was a huge hit. It was as huge as a Pushpa today; that kind of business it did.”

17 Years of Firaaq: Nandita Das on the legacy of her film; says, "Firaaq deserves a re-release"

There is something ineradicably moving about Firaaq, isn't there? Yes, Firaaq will always remain very special to me because it was my first film and because the subject is very close to my heart. It was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. You know, as a first-time filmmaker, handling five different stories with five sets of actors and five different locations was not easy.

Didn’t you feel that was too much on your plate for your first film? I didn't realize what I was getting into, but I was driven by the desire, the passion, and the intent to tell that story. Violence deeply disturbs me—physically, psychologically, and emotionally. I believe we can create empathy when we understand why people feel fear or are vulnerable. One of the most powerful things cinema can do is to invoke empathy for a more compassionate world. That’s my hope—that I can contribute, even if just a drop, to that ocean.

Shooting with so many accomplished actors, and that too in tough locations—how was the experience? The shooting was definitely quite challenging, but it also brought many cherished memories. I’m so grateful that so many actors had faith in me and agreed to be part of the film without knowing whether I could even direct. I also had a stellar crew. I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with such eminent actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Deepti Naval, and Raghubir Yadav, as well as younger actors at the time like Sanjay Suri, Tisca Chopra, and newcomers such as Shahana Goswami and Nawazuddin Siddiqui—some of his earliest work. Amrita Subhash too! Being an actor myself, it was such a delight to work with artists of that calibre.

Don’t you feel Firaaq should be re-released? In today’s wave of film releases, I really wish Firaaq could be re-released. That would be amazing, even though it’s available for free on YouTube in a good-quality copy and has been watched by many over the years. I’ve always believed that any art of true substance will survive, and time is the greatest judge of all art—cinema included. But there’s something so immersive and collective about watching a film in a theatre. I hope someday it will be re-released because, at the time, not many people could watch it in cinemas. Also, social media wasn’t as widespread back then, so spreading the word was much more difficult. I believe many would be interested in watching it today if it were re-released.

EXCLUSIVE: Lakshya on Kill ahead of its TV premiere, “My life totally changed after this film”

Filmmaker Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s action entertainer Kill, which is produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, got acclaim the world over and then impressed the audience in India as well. The film also gave the industry an action star in the form of Lakshya, who made a sensational debut. Kill is now all set to have its television premiere on Star Gold today at 8 pm. Lakshya had an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama to mark the occasion.

When asked how important are TV premieres in today’s times of OTT, he said, “I am not an expert in these things but I feel this has a value because till today even in tier 2 and 3 cities, people still watch satellite channels. I keep getting messages from people of UP and Punjab saying that they saw the film in theatres and now wish to watch on TV. It feels good because we have been watching these legendary channels like Star Gold since our childhood. We see Sooryavansham and other old films, so it feels special.”

He added, “OTT is a very quick access to cinema. You just press a button and you can watch anything at any time. But on satellite TV, you wait for films to come. Like, someone wanting to watch Kill will wait for March 20 at 8 pm. Usme ek maza hai. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Lakshya agreed that life hasn’t been the same for him after Kill. “You can totally say that my life after Kill has changed,” he said. “I was supposed to get launched by Dostana 2 but it ended up happening with Kill. Just today I was talking to a friend in London. I told him life would have been so different had I been launched with Dostana 2. I couldn’t have expected a bigger launch than Kill. What I have done with Kill and what the film has done to me, I cannot even ask for. I want to show my craft and be known for my work. And Kill was the right kind of film.”

Working with Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment is a big thing for Lakshya. He recalled an interesting incident when he saw a film produced by her years ago. “When I saw The Lunchbox for the first time, I sent her a DM on Instagram saying that I really want to work with her one day. But, of course, it was a random DM, so she didn’t see it. But the next thing I know is that I am doing my first film with Sikhya and Guneet Monga. So, universe has a very strange way of doing things. It’s amazing. She is an Oscar winner. They looked after me so much on the sets. They didn’t let me feel lack for anything.”

About working with Karan Johar’s banner, he said, “What do I say about Dharma yaar? It’s the biggest production house right now. Every actor has this wish of being a Dharma hero and do a Dharma film. That dream of mine was fulfilled in 2020 but then it took time. But der aaye, durust aaye. During that waiting phase, Apoorva (Mehta, CEO Dharma Productions), Karan and the whole Dharma team kept believing in me and kept the hopes high. I was able to do all this only because of them.”

The shoot of Kill was extremely difficult for the team. Apart from having to shoot in a cramped space of a set resembling a train, the team faced issues like injuries. Lakshya revealed that Nikhil Nagesh Bhat himself was suffering from severe backache.

“His back used to ache a lot,” said Lakshya. “So, he had kept a bed nearby and after every shot he used to lie down there. Such was his dedication. He was never giving up. And we were shooting during COVID. After every 2-3 weeks, someone used to get infected with COVID. So, we used to go in quarantine and then resume shooting. It was a very difficult film from that aspect as well. But he was so motivated and strong-headed on what we were doing as a leader, we were deriving such motivation from him.”

Kill also starred Raghav Juyal as the antagonist and Tanya Maniktala as Lakshya’s love interest.
