Sonu Nigam reveals how A R Rahman is ‘not a trained singer’; says, “His voice might not be great, but he is always in sur”

Giving Bollywood some of its biggest melodies over the years, the much-loved duo of A.R. Rahman and Sonu Nigam have been a part of the industry for decades. As the singer recalls his experience of working with the Oscar-winning music maestro, he also discussed the songs like ‘Kun Faya Fun’, ‘Rehna Tu’ and others where Rahman himself lent his voice. Impressed with how the musician continues to hold his sur (rhythm) despite not being a trained singer is something that has left Sonu Nigam impressed for years.

Addressing the skills of A R Rahman in a recent interview with O2 India, Sonu Nigam said, “Obviously, he is not a very trained singer. The tone of his voice is very nice.” Furthermore, the singer insisted that Rahman would never consider himself as a great singer. “He wouldn’t call himself a great singer, so what can we say? He knows his texture is very beautiful but he has never claimed to be a great singer," he shared.

However, that hasn’t stopped Nigam from appreciating and admiring the works of Rahman over the years. “He is a great composer, so obviously he is always in sur. The main thing is to be in sur. What is the point of a good voice texture if one is not in sur? His voice might not be great, but he is always in sur because he is AR Rahman,” he added.

Sonu Nigam and A R Rahman have collaborated in over 20 songs which includes some of the biggest chartbusters like ‘Satrangi Re’ (Dil Se), ‘Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein’ (Jodhaa Akbar), ‘Ishq Bina’ (Taal), ‘Saathiya’ (Title Track), among others. Sharing his memory associated with the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer historical drama Jodhaa Akbar, he also mentioned how Rahman allowed Nigam compose a brief portion of the much-loved track. “He must have tweaked a couple of things, but he allowed me to work on this portion because the whole song was ready. Javed (Akhtar) saab sent these lines later, so they were added then. So first we sang the whole song, then this portion was done later. He is quite secure. He is not someone who will say that I have to do it," Sonu added.
