EXCLUSIVE: Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya to re-release in cinemas on January 17, 2025

One of the most significant happenings of 2024 was that the trend of re-release became very significant. Numerous old films worked in cinemas though they were available on digital platforms. Looks like this trend will continue next year and the first re-release of 2025 will be Satya (1998).

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Satya has become a cult film over the years and continues to remain popular. Since the audience is interested to see re-releases, Ram Gopal Varma, who directed and produced the film, had a strong desire to bring it back into cinemas. The idea is that those who saw the film 26 years ago would be more than happy to watch it again and also, the young generation, who never experienced the magic of Satya on the big screen, will get a golden chance to do so.”

The source continued, “The prints have been re-mastered. Bharat Shah, who presented the film, is also involved with the re-release process. Vinay Choksi's VIP Enterprises has come on board to be the re-release distributor.”

Satya starred J D Chakravarthy, Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, Saurabh Shukla, Shefali Shah, Aditya Shrivastava, Paresh Rawal and others. It is the story of a man who comes to Mumbai looking for a job and gets drawn into the underworld. The film was loved for its realistic treatment, dialogues, songs and performances. Manoj Bajpayee's portrayal of Bhiku Mhatre made him an actor to watch out for.

Satya's songs were composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, with lyrics by Gulzar. It was written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap. Saurabh also starred in the film as Kallu Mama, which was also a character that became memorable.

It now remains to be seen whether this epic team of Satya comes together for the re-release promotions and if it does, it is sure to become a big talking point on the internet.
