After speaking about how Priyanka Chopra was uncomfortable kissing him onscreen, Annu Kapoor has made another candid statement. This time around, it is about Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De India, a film that is considered as one of the superstar’s best films till date. In a recent interaction, the veteran actor stated that the film did not respect Hindus and how it aimed at making a Muslim look like a hero as he takes over the Indian women’s hockey team.
Referring to how the character of Kabir Khan, played by Shah Rukh Khan, was inspired by the real-life hockey coach Mir Ranjan Negi, Annu Kapoor was quoted telling ANI, “The main character in Chak De! India is based on a famous coach, Negi Saab. But in India, they want to show a Muslim as a good character and make fun of a Pandit (Hindu priest). This is something old, where they use the idea of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (Hindu-Muslim unity) to put a label on it."
For the unversed, Chak De! India was produced under the Yash Raj Films banner with Shah Rukh Khan in the leading role, with over ten actresses and sports players playing key roles in the sports drama. The film revolves around a renowned Muslim hockey player, who is labelled as a traitor after losing a match against Pakistan. While he decides to prove to the nation his loyalty, he decides to take up the challenging task of training the Indian National hockey team who was not taken seriously by authorities.
Meanwhile, popular actor Annu Kapoor too has collaborated with many actors like Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Ayushmann Khurrana, among many others including Shah Rukh Khan in Darr. The actor was last seen in the controversial Hamare Baarah which experienced several setbacks owing to its portrayal of the Muslim community and also appeared in a key role in the Anupam Kher starrer The Signature.
