Sunidhi Chauhan criticizes overuse of auto-tune in music industry, says, "I might sing 100 times to ensure it sounds right, but..."

Sunidhi Chauhan, one of Bollywood's most popular playback singers, has voiced her concerns about the prevalent use of auto-tune in the music industry. In a recent conversation with Raj Shamani, Sunidhi revealed that she refrains from using auto-tune in her songs, despite its widespread use among other singers. Auto-tune is a technology designed to automatically improve and correct a singer's voice, but Sunidhi believes it compromises the uniqueness of each voice.

The impact of auto-tune on vocal uniqueness

Sunidhi shared that she prefers to practice singing her songs multiple times rather than relying on auto-tune. "I don't use auto-tune, though others do. If it's my work, I might sing 100 times to ensure it sounds right, but I won't rely on auto-tune," she explained. According to Sunidhi, while auto-tune can enhance a voice, its overuse results in voices sounding remarkably similar, which she finds problematic.

Auto-tune as a standard tool in the industry

During the conversation, Sunidhi pointed out that auto-tune has become a standard tool in the music industry. She observed that many singers now view it as an essential part of their recording process. "I've heard so many singers walk into the studio and ask, 'I'm going to go on the mic, but there's auto-tune, right?' It has become a basic expectation," she noted. This dependency on auto-tune, according to Sunidhi, detracts from the individuality of each singer's voice.

Sunidhi's journey and versatility in music

Sunidhi Chauhan's career is a testament to her talent and versatility. She began singing at local gatherings at five and made her professional debut at thirteen with a song for the film Shastra in 1996. Over the years, she has delivered numerous hits such as ‘Sajnaaji Vaari’, ‘Kaisi Paheli’, ‘Beedi’, and ‘Dance Pe Chance’. Known for her dynamic range and electrifying performances, Sunidhi continues to be a beloved figure in the Bollywood music scene.

The debate on auto-tune in modern music

The discussion around auto-tune's role in music is ongoing, with many netizens criticizing its increasing use. Sunidhi Chauhan's perspective adds a valuable voice to this debate, emphasizing the need for singers to maintain their vocal authenticity. While she acknowledges that auto-tune is not inherently bad, Sunidhi stresses the importance of using it judiciously to preserve the distinctiveness of each singer's voice.
