Tabu reflects on missed opportunities with Shekhar Kapur and their unfinished projects: “He ran away”

Tabu, celebrated for her versatility in Hindi cinema, recently shared insights into her early career interactions with renowned director Shekhar Kapur. Despite being eager to work together, their collaborations never came to fruition. In a recent interview with The Lallantop, Tabu recounted how Kapur noticed her at her aunt Shabana Azmi’s house during her teenage years and expressed a keen interest in casting her for his film Dushmani in 1987.

The unfulfilled promise of Dushmani

At the time, Tabu was in the 10th standard and was apprehensive about signing the film. However, Shekhar Kapur convinced her to take on the role opposite Sunny Deol. Unfortunately, after she agreed, the project was abruptly shut down, and Tabu decided to focus on her education, joining college soon after.

Prem: A project that almost was

Two years into her college life, Shekhar Kapur approached Tabu again with a new offer. This time, he wanted her to star in his film Prem, after having auditioned numerous girls for the role. Despite initial reluctance, Tabu was persuaded to sign on, with Shekhar promising to support her higher studies abroad. The actress initially refused his offer and remembered saying, "Dushmani ka haan bolke I have pachtaoed (I nodded for Dushmani and now I regret my decision) I don't want to act, I want to study and go abroad."

Reflections and regrets

While Tabu agreed to sign Prem, Shekhar left the film midway. "Shekhar ne hi film chhod di and he ran away," she recounted. Tabu couldn't confront the director as he wasn't available. The actress added that she regretted the decision to sign Prem thinking she could have utilized it in her studies. Late actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik was finalized to direct Prem. It also starred Sanjay Kapoor, Aruna Irani, and Amrish Puri.

Continued success and upcoming projects

Despite these early setbacks, Tabu rose to prominence with films like Vijaypath (1994) and continued to establish her legacy with notable works such as Hum Saath Saath Hain, Chandni Bar, and Drishyam. She was last seen in Crew with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon and is gearing up for the release of Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha on August 2. Additionally, Tabu will appear in the American TV series Dune: The Prophecy, playing the role of Sister Francesca.
