EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta reveals he is contemplating setting Shootout 3 out of Mumbai: “Earlier Shootout films were hits and yet, 60% of their revenue came from Maharashtra. Someone residing in Amritsar or Bathinda, usko kya malum Lokhandwala ya Wadala kya hai?”

Shootout At Lokhandwala was released in 2007 and became a talking point thanks to its plot, ensemble cast, gritty execution and music. After it became a success at the box office, producer Sanjay Gupta decided to make Shootout At Wadala. It was released in 2013 and was also directed by Sanjay. Ever since there have been talks of a third part in this series. During a recent exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, the veteran filmmaker shared interesting information on the status of Shootout 3.

Sanjay Gupta revealed, “We are still working on its script. We wrote one entire script during the lockdown. But then we realized that we didn’t want to go down that road. The genre of Mumbai crime in the 90s has become saturated. The Excel show, Bambai Meri Jaan, is also based in the same zone. Ab hum log kitna Dawood aur Chhota Rajan ka story karenge?”

He added, “Hence, we went back to the drawing board and we sat down with the writer’s team. Now, we are contemplating setting the story out of Mumbai. So, Shootout 3 will be about some shootout that took place in another part of the country.”

It is often seen that while Mumbaikars are fascinated by the underworld, the same doesn’t happen with those who are from the North, for instance. This is because they haven’t seen crazy times from up close like Mumbai residents. Hence, it does make commercial sense to take the Shootout series out of Mumbai.

On this, Sanjay Gupta replied, “Exactly. Both the Shootout films did not fare as well in Punjab as they did in Mumbai. Both the films were hits and yet, 60% of their revenue came from Maharashtra. Now, someone residing in Amritsar or Bathinda, usko kya malum Lokhandwala ya Wadala kya hai ya kahan hai? Hence, that is also the idea that we make it more appealing to a larger audience. When the story takes place in the heartland, then it becomes relatable to everybody.”
