In no time at all , Pooja Hegde has become the highest paid leading lady of Telugu cinema with superhits like Mukunda (2014), Duvvada Jagannadham (2017), Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018), Maharishi (2019), Gaddalakonda Ganesh (2019) and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020) to her credit. In Hindi, she started with the very best: Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro. Though her progress in Bollywood has been slow, her rapid rise in Telugu cinema is incontrovertible. As her new Telugu project, Radhe Shyam with Prabhas, the actress talks about her career.
15 million followers on Instagram, how does a girl as young as you handle this kind of success?
I am very grateful for those staggering numbers. More than anything else, I am aware that what I post (on Instagram) can affect 15 million people. So I am very conscious of what I put out there. I think social media needs to be more responsible and positive. That’s why whatever I upload is happy positive. There is so much negativity floating around on social media. We need to send out positive messages now more than ever.
What does success mean to you and how do you keep yourself grounded (besides a cold shower)?
That’s a very deep question. What does success mean to me? I think one of the motivations for me to succeed was to make my own dreams as well as my family’s dreams for me, come true. As for keeping grounded, my parents do a good job of that (laughs). The value system that they have instilled in me ensures that the success doesn’t go to my head.
I have heard of your fans doing some pretty crazy stuff for you in Andhra. What are the craziest fan encounters you have had so far?
Yeah I’ve seen some crazy things being done. I’ve come across fans with my name tattooed on their arm. The craziest fan was the guy who came all the way from Andhra to Mumbai to meet me and slept on the road for a couple of nights before he got what he wanted.
Does this kind of adulation flatter you?
No, in fact, it makes me feel bad. I don’t want anyone to go through this kind of pain on my account. But I am happy they want to meet me. I am grateful for all the love the fans shower on me.
In Telugu cinema you are rumoured to be the highest paid actress. Is it true? How did you manage to make yourself so indispensable in a language you didn't know?
I don’t want to talk about the money. But yes, I think it is great to be accepted in a language that I didn’t know. I now feel I’ve become a part of Telugu cinema now. I am really grateful for that.
Can you speak fluent Telugu now? Do you dub your own lines in Telugu?
Yes, I can speak Telugu fluently and I do dub my own lines. As soon as I started doing Telugu films, I began learning the language in the hope that I can soon dub my own lines. I felt this was needed to honour my craft. To be able to connect with the Telugu audience, it was really imperative to speak the language.
Once Shabana Azmi had told me that a major part of the performance happens during the dubbing.
Yes, I felt there was a big gap between what my character felt and what she said when someone else dubbed for me. Dubbing for my own lines in Telugu has helped me get closer to my character and to the audience. It’s great to be treated as one of their own in Andhra Pradesh.
Tell me about Radhe Shyam with Prabhas?
It is a really beautiful film, almost like a fairytale in its otherworldly look and feel. I haven’t done such an intense mature love story before. It’s all very new to me. I hope that the storyline and the lovers’ characters connect with the audience.
What about Hindi cinema? Are you happy with the headway you have made in Bollywood?
I feel I’m still a baby in Bollywood. I have done only two films in Hindi. I’ve taken a conscious decision to do selective films. I will only do the films I really want to do. I am excited about my forthcoming films. There is Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus with Ranveer Singh. There is Bhaijaan with Salman Khan.
That sounds impressive…
I think I’ve a long way to go. But yeah, having done Mohenjo Daro, which did not do as well as expected, to still have producers coming to me with good Hindi offers is something I’m proud of.
What are your forthcoming films?
Well, I have Most Eligible Bachelor in Telugu, I have Radhe Shyam which is a Pan-India film, I have Acharya coming up where I am doing a special role, it’s a very beautiful film too, that is Telugu. I have Beast in Tamil then Cirkus and Bhaijaan in Hindi.
Last year in September, reports surfaced that Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan will be making his OTT debut with the Hindi adaptation of the British mini-series The Night Manager. The series was to be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar and the actor was reportedly being paid a huge sum around the vicinity of Rs. 75 crore for the same. However, back in February this year, it was reported that the actor backed out from the project. This was followed by Manoj Bajpayee's exit who couldn't be part of it due to the unavailability of the dates. So, the makers began to hunt two actors and now they've found their characters in Malang stars, Aditya Roy Kapur and Anil Kapoor.
According to a report in a tabloid, Aditya and Anil have been locked in to headline in the Indian adaptation of The Night Manager. While Aditya plays the role of Indian version of the Jonathan Pine character, essayed by Tom Hiddleston in the original 2016 limited series based on the 1993 novel by John Le Carre, whereas Anil Kapoor will reprise Hugh Laurie's role of an arms dealer who disguises himself to be a business tycoon.
The makers are currently finalising the principal cast for the film. Sandeep Modi will direct the six-part spy series and it promises to be made on a big scale. It is being produced by Preity Zinta in association with Banijay Asia.
The Night Manager is a British television serial directed by Susanne Bier and starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, David Harewood, Tom Hollander, and Elizabeth Debicki in pivotal roles. The series originally premiered on BBC One on February 21, 2016.
Following the releasing multiple chart-topping songs this year, BTS is not slowing down anytime soon. As the group is gearing up for their upcoming offline and online concerts, the group's eldest member and vocalist Jin is awaiting the release of his OST. He will croon the main theme track for the upcoming mystery Korean drama Jirisan starring Jun Ji Hyun and Joo Ji Hoon in lead roles.
On October 1, the production company of the drama, AStory, made an official announcement about Jin's participation in the highly-anticipated drama. According to Korean tabloid Soompi, the statement read, “BTS’s Jin’s song for the Jirisan OST will be the main theme song for Jirisan, and you will be able to hear it starting from midway through the drama. We will announce the release date [for the song] at a separate time.”
Set against the backdrop of towering views of Mount Jiri, where rangers and other employees of the Jirisan National Park climb through the mysterious and unexplored regions of the mountain, trying to rescue the survivors and lost trekkers. Seo Yi Kang is the park's top ranger who has vast experience in navigation, making her knowledgeable when it comes to tracking down lost individuals. One day, she becomes the partner of Kang Hyun Jo, a rookie park ranger who is a military academy graduate and an ex-lieutenant who experienced a horrific incident on Mount Jiri which led him to become a ranger. The drama is centered around a mystery surrounding the mountain's many visitors; those who come to kill, and those who come to end their lives. The two rangers will investigate the truth behind the mysterious accident.
The drama is penned by Kingdom writer Kim Eun Hee and helmed by Goblin director Lee Eung Bok. Jirisan premieres on October 23 at 9 p.m. KST.

It’s going to be January 6, 2022, for one of the most eagerly awaited films Gangubai Kathiawadi. Unlike other filmmakers who are jumping into the release bandwagon, producer Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay Leela Bhansali were in no hurry to announce a release date for their ambitious project, Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Jayantilal Gada approached Bhansali about a possible release date the minute the Maharashtra government announced the re-opening of movie theatres in the State. However, Bhansali asked Gada to wait for suitable date next year.
“Too many release dates were announced for this year within 24 hours of the announcement. Sanjay Bhansali feels it is premature to schedule Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2021. He wanted to push it for when until the pandemic situation is clearer. Also, Sanjay feels that until theatres are allowed to run to 100 percent capacity (contrary to the 50 percent occupancy allowed at the moment) audiences won’t feel confident enough to return to movie theatres. By January, theatres should be running to full capacity,” says a source close to Bhansali.
Presuming that the pandemic predicament will be progressively pulverized a decision was taken to release Gangubai Kathiawadi on January 6, 2022.

The omnipresent Anupam Kher tells a very interesting story about Hrishikesh Mukherjee. “We were shooting for his last film, Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate. Hrishida’s legs had given way, and he’d sit and direct us. I playfully asked him if all his parts had stopped working. ‘No, Anupam, my most vital parts still work fine.…’ Hrishida answered with a smile.”
An eminent, very sober and refined filmmaker who has been closely associated with Hrishida tells another story about the prolific Mukherjee during his final days. “I had gone there expecting him to be mournful and doom-laden. Instead, Hrishida cracked one dirty joke after another for a full hour. Finally, I got embarrassed and fled.” Hrishida loved a good laugh. You only have to see Golmaal, Khubsoorat, Bawarchi or even the lesser-known laughathons Buddha Mil Gaya, Naram Garam and Jhoothi to know how much this amazing man enjoyed the lighter side of life.
About his penchant for laughter Hrishida once told me, “To keep laughing is the most important thing in life. Our aim in life is to be happy. But we go wrong looking for happiness in transitory pleasures. You fall in love with a girl and pin your happiness on her. She dumps you. You produce a son and you place all your dreams in him. He leaves you. Happiness shouldn’t control your life. You should control happiness.” And yet this man who made such super-comedies also directed some of life’s most lingering moments of tragic pathos in Anuradha (the story of how a male ego thwarts a woman’s talents, inspired by Kishore Kumar’s marriage to his first wife Ruma) and later its quasi-remake, Abhimaan; Anupama (about a man who hates his daughter after his wife dies in childbirth, the story was inspired by Hrishida’s uncle who became an alcoholic after his wife died during childbirth); Satyakam (the director’s favourite work featuring his ‘favourite actor and human being’ Dharmendra); Anand (based on Hrishida’s intense friendship with Raj Kapoor, featuring Amitabh Bachchan as Hrishida and Rajesh Khanna as Raj Kapoor).
Before he moved to the hospital two months before his death, Hrishida was completely bedridden for close to two years. The intermittent visitor apart, he lay there inert staring at the ceiling probably reliving all the golden moments from his cinema. But the spirit never flagged. This writer’s last conversation with Hrishida had him imploring him to visit him. “Beta, come and see me soon. I’m just counting my days now.”
When I visited some years ago, Hrishida had moved into a highrise in Bandra, just next to where his bungalow used to be. There he sat with his arthritis and memories, trying to cope with both. His living room had only one picture prominently at its centre, that of Lata Mangeshkar. “People call her a reincarnation of Saraswati Mata. I call her Saraswati. Beta, do you know this is where Lata and I sat with composers like Sachin Dev Burman and Rahul Dev Burman and Salil Choudhury to compose those gems in Abhimaan, Jurmana and Anand?”
He then revealed an unknown facet of Lataji’s personality. “Beta, do you know she doesn’t charge a single paisa for any of the songs that she sings for me? She once made a mistake while singing one of my songs, ‘Ek Baat Kahoon’, for R.D. Burman in Golmaal. I had my answer ready for people who asked why I allowed Lata to sing wrongly. ‘A wrong Lata is worth more than all the right singers in the industry.’ And then Hrishida laughed loudly. He loved his fun and games.
Simi Garewal once recalled how he spent hours, playing chess with her during Namak Haraam. “What an erudite and entertaining filmmaker. I learnt so much from him.”
Hrishida loved all his actors. From Ashok Kumar who was a permanent fixture in a majority of his films to Rajesh Khanna whom Hrishida affectionately called Pintu Baba to Rekha (for whom he had a special Tamilian term of affection “Chinnapunnu” which means youngest daughter), Jaya and Sharmila Tagore.
Hrishida’s wellwishers wanted him to sign Nutan for Anupama. “How can Sharmila play the demure repressed character when she’s busy running around in a bikini in An Evening In Paris? But I knew she had the expressive eyes for it,” Hrishida told me.
Jaya and Amitabh were Hirishida’s favourites. AB went to Hrishida to say he was marrying Jaya Recalled Hrishida, “I told Jaya I’ll be attending her marriage from my son Amitabh’s side.”
The filmmaker was very unhappy with the kind of work AB did in the 80s. “Many directors reduced him to a stuntman. Some people thought I had blundered badly by making Amit sing classical songs in Alaap, when he was holding guns and booze bottles.”
Alaap was made during the Emergency. “It was a depressing film because I was very depressed. I thought it was the end of my life. I couldn’t believe Mrs Gandhi had become such a dictator.”
To snap out of the doomed mood Hrishida made the comedy, Khubsoorat. Explaining the hop and the skip from the grim directorial debut of Musafir to the grin mood in Biwi Aur Makaan, from the dark Majhli Didi and Satyakam to the frothy Guddi and Chupke Chupke, from the nifty Naram Garam to the elegiac Jurmana and Bemisal…Hrishida said, “I’m an agnostic. I believe my conscience is my God. But having said that, we’re all creatures of moods. At times you want to cry, at other times you want to laugh your head off. Critics ask me why I always have a death scene. I’ll tell you why. Death is the ultimate truth. Deven Varma once observed, Sabse Bada Sukh (India’s first sex comedy!) was my only film where no one died. I told Deven he was wrong. It flopped so miserably that it killed the distributors.”
Sobering down Hrishida lamented on the quality of present-day cinema. “Everyone is stealing stories from laser discs. I confess I’m guilty of making potboilers like Do Dil and Asli Naqli. That’s because I had a unit and their family to maintain. I am aware my talent is severely restricted. I can never make a film like Satyajit Ray. I console myself with the thought that I’ve made decent films on family values which have touched people’s hearts. I’ve made films which have recovered their investments and fed my unit.”
After his last film, Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate, Hrishida was planning to adapt a short story called The Dressing Table written by music composer Salil Choudhury. What Hrishida loved about the story was its quaint old-world values. “It talks about the value of a letter at a time when people are sending e-mails to one another.”
Thankfully Hrishida quit this world before people started watching his films on phones.
Set to take place between October 9th and 17th, ALT EFF is back in 2021 with a compelling and entertaining line up of environmental films overseen by a distinguished jury and advisory team of the festival. The program holds 44 films, carefully divided into ten film bundles: Drive-Thru Shorts, Activision, Midnight Tails, What’s On Your Plate?, Sapling Stories (Kids Friendly), Flux & Form, A Chasm of Hope, New Voices, Deep Dive Features and Programmer’s Choice, representing a total of 31 countries and showcasing 33 India premieres. This year’s edition has a new film submission category, a 'Youth Category’, along with International Feature Films, International Short Films, Indian Feature Films, and Indian Short Films. Originally, ALT EFF was conceived as a physical festival, but this year, in order to ensure safety for all festival-goers, ALT EFF remains virtual.
Sophy Vsivaraman joins the advisory team of the festival alongside the legendary Mike Pandey, who has spent over 35 years in the environmental and filmmaking space, and Pooja Jauhari, the CEO of Glitch. The jury includes Michael Snyder, a heavily awarded photojournalist and filmmaker together with Amin Hajee, Anand Patwardhan, and Sourav Sarangi. The ambassadors representing the festival include Jackie Shroff and Mrunmayee Deshpande amongst other leading figures in the industry. The founding team comprises Kunal Khanna, Neha Shreshta, and Rudransh Mathur.
Founding member and the festival director, Kunal Khanna says, "Humans are in an existential crisis and it is as a result of how we are treating all other species and ecosystems apart from ourselves, we need a fundamental and systemic shift in the way we operate. Using film as its core medium, ALT EFF is a platform and a confluence that will nurture and inspire critical thinking to address the climate emergency we are in."
Actor Jackie Shroff added, "Let there be more such films from the whole globe, everyone is concerned about the environment, let us educate through films. And hence it’s important to wish luck and congratulate the team of ALT EFF for such a great initiative. It's a great medium of education for survival and sustainability. Let's educate ourselves and our kids through such fine films at such a festival that talks about the basics of the forest, the water, the air, the food and the soil”.
The wildlife filmmaker, Mike Pandey says, “Environmental festivals like ALT EFF, bring environmental issues to the forefront and offer viable solutions. They motivate and empower us to take the right step and attempt to make a difference to restore the beauty and sustainability of our only home, this planet we call Earth.”
He adds “Festivals like ALT EFF, play a crucial role in communicating and sensitizing people, helping them develop a sense of respect for the environment through films. It is what you respect, that you love and protect.”
The co-founder Neha Shreshta says, "Humans who are just one of all the living things on this planet actually control the fate of every living thing and the planet itself - what we do with this power, can make or break our collective future. ALT EFF is our way of bringing awareness via the powerful medium of film- no matter how much information or research there is in the world, it has no meaning unless it is presented such that people can understand it. Film does that."
Marie Luise Schega, another co-founder says, “ALT EFF is as much a call to action as it is a celebration. We are motivated by a grand vision - to co-create a sustainable future - and this desire for collaboration, for diversity, for having the courage to dream big has shaped our festival program. Many of the stories told in the films we chose seem complex, some polarising, which is reflective of the environmental crises at large. Yet, as the credits roll and the screen turns black, we wish for viewers to simply look up, explore their own environments, and ask themselves: Where can I make a difference in my community?”
Rudransh Mathur says, "Through ALT EFF, we hope to make Panchgani a hub for eco-awareness and move the town in the direction of sustainable tourism while retaining and promoting its natural beauty and unique geography."
ALT EFF is dedicated to supporting filmmakers, creators, and artists who are eager to connect audiences with environmental themes through impactful storytelling. It was established based on a need to bring people together through the arts and to raise awareness about issues that surround the climate justice movement.

It will inhabit a very new space in Indian cinema; it's a hostage drama, a genre that has not been explored to its full potential. Hopefully, we will get lots of love from the audience," the producer adds.

The Bollywood star has been turning heads with his incredible transformation as he battled obesity and came out stronger. He has maintained, “Not many know, but I have been battling obesity for the longest time. I was just not a fat kid, it was a health issue. It hasn’t been easy. My underlying health condition has always made it a struggle for me to constantly stay a certain size. While I have been criticised a lot for my physique, I have taken it on the chin because people expect actors to be seen in a certain body type. I understand that. They haven’t understood the struggle that I have gone through and it’s alright. I only have to prove it to myself and to people who believe in me.”
